ABOUT POODLES

Poodles are known for their superior intelligence and exceptional learning ability. They make wonderful family dogs and watchdogs. They do not shed and are hypoallergenic; however, they do require regular brushing and grooming.

Miniature poodles are 10-15" in height and 10-15 pounds. Their life expectancy is 10-18 years.

The standard poodle originated as duck hunters in Germany, where the word “pudelin” refers to splashing in water. The "poodle clip" was designed by hunters to help the dogs swim more efficiently. They would leave hair on the leg joints to protect them from extreme cold and sharp reeds. Hunters in Germany and France used the Poodle as gundogs and as retrievers of waterfowl and to sniff out truffles lying underground in the woods. The French started using the breed as circus performers because of the dog's high intelligence and trainability. The breed became very popular in France, which led to the common name "French Poodle," but the French people actually called the breed the "Caniche," meaning "duck dog.” Eventually, the standard was bred down to the miniature size to allow it to move from the lake to the lap of luxury. In the 18th century, they became very popular with French Royalty.

Red poodles can go through color changes as they grow. In most cases, they are born a deep red color and then lighten over time, usually between their first and second year.  When a red does lighten, the color will usually become a sort of cinnamon color with darker highlights which is also quite beautiful!

Miniature poodles make perfect family pets. They are gentle and get along well with other dogs and they will be happy to play with your other pets too. Our dogs regularly play with the cats, hang out with the chickens, and have even been videoed playing with a resident squirrel. They're the perfect addition to any family!
